  1. As a student of Socrates, Plato (428¬≠347 B.C.) was a Greek 
  2. philosopher who pursued truth through questions, answers, and 
  3. additional questions. He believed in two essential characteristics of 
  4. knowledge: first, that it must be certain and infallible; second, that it is 
  5. genuine and not merely an appearance. In 387 B.C. he founded the 
  6. Academy in Athens, described as the first European university.

  8. The early Dialogues of Plato  (428¬≠347 B.C.) relate the teachings and 
  9. style of his mentor, Socrates. Here, Socrates plays the character of 
  10. the fool in order to unmask self-proclaimed experts. Socrates continues 
  11. to be a central figure in Plato‚Äôs middle and late Dialogues  but their 
  12. philosophical underpinnings are Plato‚Äôs own; they include his theories of 
  13. Forms and of Knowledge.
